Biography

Life and Career

Diane Clare with her husband Barry England, 1967

Diane was born as Diane C. O. G. Dirsztay on the 8th of July 1938, in Wandsworth, London. Her parents were Antoine and Patricia Dirsztay. She began acting at a very young age, for a time

being one of the most highly paid babies in the

British film business! She appeared in films such

as The Silver Fleet and The Ghosts Of Berkeley

Square, playing uncrdited roles as various infants.

She was dropped when she became too old

to continue playing babies; but Diane, now set upon

being in pictures, added a year to her age so she

could study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (R.A.D.A) in London. Her

big break came when lead actress Anna Massey dropped out of the hit play

The Reluctant Debutant. Diane took over the part at three days notice and continued to play it until the end of the play's West End run. She made her film comeback at the age of  nineteen in the 1958 war film Ice Cold in Alex as the ill-fated nurse Denise Norton. This quickly led to a small part in  Indiscreet, starring Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman. She then travelled to Paris to shoot the film version of The Reluctant Debutant, this time only playing a supporting role. During her career, Diane appeared in several horror films, inclding Robert Wise's acclaimed The Haunting (1963) and Hammer Horror classic Plague of the Zombies (1966). In 1967 she screen tested for the role of Tara King for The Avengers, but Linda Thorson was awarded the part.

Later that same year, on the set of the TV film The Man Who Understood Women, Diane met a young writer named Barry England. Romance blossomed and by the end of the year she retired from acting to marry Barry. They had two children, Kate, born two years later in 1969 and Christopher, born in 1971. Apart from that, very little is known about her later life. Barry and Diane remained married until his death in 2009, after being together forty-two years.

Diane Dirsztay England passed away on June 21st 2013, age 74.
